While South Africa is not the only country that boasts diamond mines, and was not even the first, the discovery of diamond mines in this part of the world made these stones a much more familiar and obtainable commodity. Prior to the diamond find in this region, diamonds were considered extremely rare and valuable – a stone that was indeed primarily fit for royalty. In fact, in the thirteenth century, an act by Louis IX of France stated that diamonds would by law be reserved for the king only. However, by the seventeenth century, some of the wealthier parts of the European population were sporting diamonds in some of their jewelry as well. When diamond mines were found in South Africa a couple of centuries later, the supply began to allow many other folks to purchase one of these gemstones as well.
1867: Diamond Mines are Discovered
Early in this year, the son of a South African farmer found a beautiful, transparent stone on his father’s farmland. This stone, discovered on the banks of the Orange River, became the first diamond find in this region, and led to the creation of a number of diamond mines that began to yield record-breaking numbers of the stones. Within a few years time, this area produced more diamonds than India had in the 2000 years prior. No wonder these precious gems began to become available to more and more people who appreciated their beauty and value. This increase in diamond sales was helped along by the increase in wealth that had occurred in nations like the United States in particular.

Diamond Head is the name of a volcano cone in Hawaii. This volcano cone is located on the island of O’ahu and is actually known to Hawaiians by the name of Le’ahi. Needless to say, they thought they had found quite a valuable piece of property.
The History of Diamond Head
The Diamond Head volcano cone is a part of the Honolulu Volcanic Series. This is a series of volcanic eruption areas that have created many of the island of O’ahu’s landmarks.
