Learning About Diamond Ring Settings
December 16, 2008 9:39 am diamonds, jewelryOne of the most important decisions that you will have to make when choosing a diamond ring is the diamond ring settings that you are interested in. There are a few different diamond ring settings to choose from, and it is really the setting which determines the beauty of the ring overall, as this is what people are going to notice most when they look at the ring.
Your Options
There are a few different diamond ring settings options. The prong setting, which is sometimes also known as the claw setting, is the most commonly used ring setting, and this is where the diamond or gem is inserted into three or more metal prongs that form a basket-like base. Then the ends of the prongs here are bent over and shaped accordingly so that they rest snugly against the crown of the ring.
There are definitely advantages to the prong diamond ring settings, such as the fact that the prong settings are very quick to make, and so they are usually less expensive than other types of settings. As well, they are tiny and so more of the diamond is visible, and stones that are set in prongs are also much easier to clean.
Another of the most popular types of diamond ring settings are the channel settings, which especially popular for engagement bands and wedding bands. Gemstone settings are nearly always named a term that best describes their method of holding the diamonds in place, and the same rule applies here. The diamonds or gems are placed into a metal channel, which is used to hold and protect them.
The bezel setting is also very popular, especially for the modern woman, as it is a band of metal, traditionally gold, which is wrapped around a diamond or other gemstone, protruding around its sides. Typically the band is plain, however it can be engraved if desired, or even decorated with tiny diamonds or other precious or semi-precious gems.
If you have multiple diamonds in your ring, then one of the best settings you can choose is the pave setting, in which many diamonds or other small precious or semi-precious stones are fitted onto the metal band.
Just remember that because the most suitable setting for a ring is largely dictated by the materials that are used in the crafting, it is thus usually the best idea to choose the particular gemstones and metal that you want before you attempt to choose the setting of the ring.
