f.jpgA diamond pendant, not to be confused with a diamond necklace, can be representative of many things like all pendants. Throughout history pendants have served many purposes. These purposes are varied and have changed throughout the years.

Purposes of Pendants

Throughout the years pendants have served many purposes. While modern day diamond pendants have likely never been used for identification purposes, other pendants in the past have. One example of this type is use for a pendant would be military identification pendants, also known as dog tags. These pendants have been used to identify soldiers if they are killed in battle and are either unrecognizable or unknown to the people that find them.

Pendants have also been used to display one’s religion. One example of this is individuals that wear crosses around their necks. Pendants have been used to show faith and other religions as well. Pendants can be used to show faith in Christianity, various pagan and New Age religions, Eastern religions, and various other religions.

In conjunction with their religious use, pendants have been used as forms of protection. The most common practice of this is when a person wears a symbol of their religion as a pendant with the expectation that it will offer some sort of protection. This protection may be spiritual, physical, or magical in nature. While this may not be as common in modern day as it was in the past, it is still seen in many areas of the world.

Pendants have been used through much of history as awards. One modern example of this type of situation would be in the Olympics. Winners of the various events in the Olympics are given pendants made of gold, silver, or bronze. Each pendant showcases who won first, second, and third place in each event.

Pendants (both diamond pendants and pendants made of other materials) have also been used for self-affirmation. This is generally seen one person wears a pendant with things such as their in initials on them. Diamond pendants (and pendants made of other materials) are also seen with either last or first names on them.

While not seen in ancient history, diamond pendants have been common in the modern day. Diamonds were not commonly used in any type of jewelry until the 19th century. This is when the De Beers Group started a series of very successful marketing campaigns that caused diamonds to become common in jewelry today. The De Beers Group still maintains nearly 50% of the diamond market share to this day.
